Demister pads are also called mist eliminators or sprayers. This is a highly efficient separation unit used in various process industries for the removal of liquid droplets from gas or vapor streams.
Demister filters are made of fine materials such as stainless steel wire, copper wire, Monel alloy wire, and glass fiber. According to the characteristics of the filter, the mist eliminator is divided into standard type, high-efficiency type, high permeability type, and shock absorption type.
The demister pads work by coalescing smaller liquid droplets by obstructing their path. Obstruction of the path causes increased collisions among the liquid droplets. Most of these droplets stick together and form bigger droplets that are too heavy to rise with the gas stream. Thus the more significant liquid drops drop down in the pool of liquid below. The gas stream is not affected by the obstruction in the path and escapes through the top vapor outlet. The obstruction in the path of liquid droplets can be achieved by a variety of geometries. Demister pad may be a mesh-type coalescer, vane pack, or other structure intended to aggregate the mist into droplets that are heavy enough to separate from the vapor stream.
